Our clerkship program is designed to give clerks exposure to the “real life” practice of law at Hopping Green & Sams.
We invest significant resources to introduce law students to our practices and our firm, including real work experience, client contact, and other practical training programs not offered in law school. Each clerk has an opportunity to explore the diverse practice portfolio of our firm under the supervision of attorneys who provide timely and substantive feedback on completed assignments. Because the firm has a collective and not hierarchical structure, clerks may work directly with the most junior associate one day, and the most senior shareholder the next.
The Clerkship Experience
Each clerk experience is unique, based primarily on client needs and the calendar of work that arises during a given summer or academic semester. Generally, clerks should expect to enjoy many of the following opportunities:
- Assignments that ensure a broad, informative, and substantive exposure to the firm’s practice areas and attorneys. Because of our firm’s size, clerks have the opportunity to work with many of our shareholders and associates and should have the opportunity to interact with most, if not all, the firm’s attorneys.
- Exposure to the firm’s activities in the federal and state courts (such as attending oral argument), before local, state, and federal bodies (such as attending legislative committee meetings, agency hearings, or commission or board meetings), and with clients (such as attending appropriate client meetings or direct client contact on assignments).
- For clerks working with us during the summer, the firm hosts several formal social events to provided a chance to get to know our lawyers on a more informal basis. These events are coordinated by firm associates who serve as “cruise directors” for summer clerks. The firm also encourages clerks to take advantage of informal opportunities to socialize and get to know the firm’s lawyers.
Each fall, we recruit top students from leading law schools throughout the United States as summer clerks for the following year. We currently conduct on-campus interviews at select schools and collect resumes from many others.
Candidates at schools not currently scheduled for on-campus interviews or resume collection should send a letter or email to our Recruiting Coordinator explaining their interest in Hopping Green & Sams and attaching a resume, transcript and writing sample. In order to ensure full consideration, these materials must be received by us no later than the August 15 of each year, for positions beginning the following year.
Academic Semester Clerks
Throughout the year, we also recruits students as academic semester clerks for the fall and spring semesters. Second and third year law students interested in a semester clerk position should also contact our Recruiting Coordinator with the information requested above.
Law Students and Recent Graduates
Third year law students interested in associate opportunities with Hopping Green & Sams should check with the Career Services office at their law schools to determine whether we will be recruiting on campus for full-time associate positions. Candidates at law schools where we are not conducting on-campus interviews should send a letter or email to our Recruiting Coordinator explaining their interest in Hopping Green & Sams and attaching a resume, transcript and writing sample.
