Texting Ban Passed by Florida Legislature

Posted Friday, May 10th, 2013

Senator Detert’s texting bill, CS/CS/CS/SB 52, was passed by the Florida Legislature. The bill creates a ban on texting while driving, enforceable as a secondary offense. It, however, provides exceptions for emergency workers performing their official duties, and for drivers reporting emergencies or suspicious activity, operating navigational and other systems built into the vehicle, and operating autonomous vehicles. HGS attorney, Diane Carr, worked closely with the bill sponsor throughout the session and other interested stakeholders.
