On Monday, March 18, 2013, the Florida Senate Communications, Energy, and Public Utilities Committee held a meeting to discuss the current and future status of nuclear energy in Florida, including an emphasis on nuclear advanced cost recovery. Bills have been filed in the House and Senate that would curtail or repeal the cost recovery mechanism adopted in 2006, which enables utilities to recover a portion of preconstruction and interest costs of nuclear projects in current rates. The meeting included public comment and a panel discussion with speakers Steve Scroggs of Florida Power and Light, Alex Glenn of Progress Energy Florida, Mark Futrell of the Florida Public Service Commission, and J. R. Kelly of the Florida Office of Public Counsel.
