HGS Attorneys Help Defend Everglades Agricultural Permits

Posted Thursday, April 24th, 2014

On April 17, 2014, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) issued a final order rejecting Florida Audubon Society’s challenge of three comprehensive permits governing water control structures and agricultural activities on more than 230,000 acres of farmland in South Florida.   SFWMD adopted an Administrative Law Judge’s recommended order, which rejected Audubon’s claims that best management practices being implemented by the farmers are insufficient despite their success in reducing phosphorus levels by an annual average of more than 50% since 1995.  Hopping Green & Sams (HGS) attorneys Gary Perko and Mohammad Jazil represented Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida, an association of sugar and vegetable farmers, in the case.
