Final Areawide Environmental Impact Statement on Phosphate Mining Issued

Posted Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), in cooperation with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), made its Final Areawide Environmental Impact Statement on Phosphate Mining in the Central Florida Phosphate District (FAEIS) available on April 25, 2013.  Any comments on the FAEIS must be submitted within 30 days of the date on which the Notice of Availability appears in the Federal Register, which is expected to be on May 3, 2013.  Individual records of decision (RODs) on the four mine permit applications addressed in the FAEIS will be issued thereafter, no sooner than June 2, 2013.  However, the Corps has determined that draft Section 404(b)(1) and public interest review analyses will be made available for each project for review and comment in light of the FAEIS recommendations; therefore it is unlikely the project RODs will be issued as early as June 2.  A copy of the FAEIS can be obtained here.
